Industrial GUI Test Automation
Replaced 185 manual GUI test cases with automated tests and cut test duration from 40 to 5 hours.
Context
TIA Portal is Siemens’ engineering framework for industrial automation. GUI regression tests in the project were executed manually, so every test cycle took a long time.
What I did
- Analysed the application’s MSAA (Microsoft Active Accessibility) structures to drive the GUI programmatically.
- Designed automated GUI tests applying OOP and test-driven development principles.
- Replaced 185 manual test cases with automated test scripts.
Outcome
- Test duration reduced by 87.5% — from 40 to 5 hours.
- Earlier defect detection and faster releases.
